Why, When, and How Should You Cleanse Your Gemstones?

Over time, you may feel your gemstones or jewellery aren’t working for you the way they originally did. Think of it like an untidy room that needs a bit of TLC—crystals absorb energies, and eventually, they need a “reset” to maintain their peak effectiveness.

How often is enough?

This depends on your own intuition. As a general rule:

  • Daily Wear: If you’ve had a difficult day or been around “energy vampires,” a weekly cleanse is a good idea, but generally monthly is perfect.

  • The “Hands-on” Rule: If someone else touches your jewellery (“Oh! What a beautiful bracelet!”), give it a quick cleanse to clear their energy.

  • Home Decor: For larger pieces in your home, a deep cleanse every six months keeps their vibrancy glowing.

Our Favoured Cleansing Methods

There is no “perfect” way to cleanse, but extra care should be taken with different gemstones in one item. Calm Blue C recommends these effective options:

  • Selenite (The “Easy” Way): Selenite is unique because it cleanses other stones! Simply place your jewellery on a Selenite plate or next to a tumble stone overnight. This is our absolute favourite method.

  • Water: Just as we cleanse ourselves with water, it makes sense for our gems. You can use a freshwater stream or a cold tap at home. Visualise the spent energy washing away in a bright white light. Caution: Some stones, like Selenite, break down in water, and others, like Fluorite, may lose their colour.

  • Moonlight: The moon is a powerful deep cleanser and charger. Lay your pieces on a window ledge during a New or Full Moon.

  • Rock Salt or Himalayan Salt: Lay your jewellery on a bed of dry salt for 24 hours to absorb negative energy. Be sure to throw the salt away afterwards!

  • Smudging: Encircle your stone in the smoke of a sage bundle for 30 to 60 seconds.

  • Sound: Vibrations from singing bowls or tingsha bells hit the exact frequencies gems need to shake off stagnant energy.

  • The Earth: Bury your gems in a freshly dug patch of soil overnight to ground them. Just be sure to brush away any loose soil the next morning.

Gentle & Professional Methods

Meditation & Visualisation This is a beautiful, hands-on way to bond with your piece. Hold your jewellery in your hands, close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths. Visualise a bright, white cleansing light washing over the stones, carrying away any “spent” energy until you feel the piece feels “light” again.

How You Can Use Reiki Energy for Cleansing

While a professionally attuned practitioner can provide a deep energetic “reset,” you can also use the principles of Reiki at home to keep your crystals clear. You don’t need a special certificate to share your own healing warmth with your gems to help wash away stagnant energy!

  • The Palm Connection: Place your jewellery or gemstone in your dominant hand and gently cover it with your other hand.

  • The Cleansing Light: Close your eyes and imagine a flow of universal life force—like a brilliant, white cleansing light—flowing through your arms and bathing the stone.

  • The Reset: Visualise this bright light dissolving any heavy or “grey” energy the stone has absorbed, leaving it sparkling and energetically fresh. Even if you aren’t attuned, your focused intention acts as a gentle “top-up,” ensuring your crystals feel light and ready to support you.
